Welcome back!
Welcome back to my abandoned blog! After many months of being dormant and depressed I've returned. The injury last year, the moving debacles and the awful situation at work basically just sent me over the top.
I'll start with the injury update. Once I was cleared to run again from the doctor I thought that maybe I could still pull off the NYC marathon. But it just didn't happen. I didn't do everything I should have done while I was injured and having the moving situation happen at the same time didn't help. I was scared to build up mileage and I just wasn't there cardiovascularly either. Plus I was carrying too much extra weight. I was training for a charity and I still managed to raise about $1500 for A Running Start. When I had to back out they said they would hold a spot for me in 2009 but I will have to start over again with fund raising. I've put in for the lottery for NYC, but if I don't get it I don't think I can run for A Running Start. In this economy I can not in good conscience ask people for fund raising money two years in a row especially after an injury last year. If I don't get into NYC this year I believe the following year I will have guaranteed entry for not making the lottery three years in a row. So one of these days I will run the NYC Marathon! Next year would be interesting because if all goes according to plan I will be in grad school.
The moving situation is all under control and Virgil and the McGivern's are just a bad memory of last summer. Last summer was basically our five week camping trip to the country side where we brought all of our worldly possessions. It is over and we're very happy where we are now. Well at least now that the snow is over.
As far as work goes I really never want to re-live the past year. First we had the 20th Anniversary of our building which could have been good stress but it just ended up being one nightmare after another. It was a lot of extra work and I just think we could have done it better. This is all on top of a normal season and the usual work. Then of course there is the daily nightmare of the environment that has not improved and I have little hope for. But I keep trying...THEN came the lay offs. I know they happened all over campus and I've heard from other departments it was not handled well anywhere. It was extremely unprofessional and stressful. I hope the next time in my career that I have to encounter what is already an awful situation is it handled with more grace and professionalism.
For now I'm pain free. I've lost almost 20 pounds since Thanksgiving and I'm trying to drop another 20. I spent much of the winter going to spinning class and using my spinning bike at home. It was great way to get in shape without the impact on my joints and frame. I've built back up to a 5k and I ran my first one of the season last weekend. I finished in 28:18 and got second place in my age category. I was really happy because I've never placed in a race before. I hope to spend the summer trying to do shorter races and hopefully in the fall do a half and then the NYC marathon in November. BUT I'm not going to over train!
